What is Probability & Statistics?

Well first of all, probability and statistics is objective 5 in math. There are a few things that fall into the category of probability and statistics. One is using fractions to describe the outcome of an experiment, and in another way, it is called probability. To explain probability, you could say that it is guessing what will land on something by using information in the problem to support your answer. For example:

Lyra had a few cards that spelled LIONESS. As an experiment, she decided to pick a card of that word out of a hat. What is the probability that she is going to pick a card that has an S on it? 

First of all, we have to find out how many cards there are. There exactly 7 letters (L(1), I (2), O(3), N(4), E(5), S(6), S(7). And how many S cards are there? There are exactly 2 of those cards. So we make a fraction out of that and get 2/7. It's really quite easy. This also works for showing the result. You do the same procedure. Example:
Robert had 12 pairs of socks. Here are each of the colors:

Blue-7
Black-3
Purple-1
Green-1

Question:What is the fraction for the BLACK socks?

Procedure: I looked at how much blacks there were, and there were 3. The fraction would be 3/12. If you reduce the fraction, it will be 1/4. 

Here's an even more trickier one, so read carefully!

Lorraine's class voted for their class president. Here are the results:

Question: How many people would probably vote for Lorraine if there were 40 people?


Procedure: Add up all of the votes, and you get 20 people. Put Lorraine's number of votes over a fraction, and you get 9/20. Since 20 is 1/2 of 40, you just double the fraction! And so you then get 18/40. As I said before, everything is easy once you understand it. So basically, the answer is 18 people.


Another thing that falls into the probability and statistic objective is median, mode, maximum, minimum, range, and mean (also known as average). Let's give a little explanation about each.  

Median is when you line the set of numbers from smallest to largest (or largest to smallest) , and cross them off until you get to the middle. If it is between two numbers, find the average between the numbers.  

Mode is the number(s) in the set that appear the most.  If the set is all different numbers, there is no mode a all.


Maximum is the largest number in the set.  

Minimum is the smallest number in the set.  

Range is the difference of the minimum and the maximum. 

Last but not least, there is mean/average. Mean is basically the average. In case you forgot what it is, I'll explain. First, you add all of the numbers up. Once you're done with that, divide the total, or sum, by the numbers there are total. Here is yet another example:

12,34, 28, 78, 89, 56, 12
Correct order: 12, 12, 28, 34, 56, 78, 89
Minimum: 12
Maximum: 89
Range: 77
Mode: 12
Median: 34
Mean: 44
(P.S. In case the mean/ average is not a whole number, just round it up.)
